bit. new details on the shooting of an alameda sheriff's deputy. we have exclusive video of the response. ktvu was in a ride along with the sergeant when the call for help came over the radio. >> shots fired. shots fired. >> where? where? >> that's it. >> got it. >> they shot the exclusive video and they sped to the scene and it is the 40:00 last night. they found the suspect's suv crashed into a building and they were shot in the foot. >> gunfire broke out and deputies tried to arrest the driver. >> that's when things went sideways. they were trying to get him out. he put the car in drive and two cops were going down the street and dragging one of the deputies with them. >> that deputy started shooting after he was dragged. >> they did find a gun in the suv and the suspect died overnight and the injured deputy will be okay.

>> a suspected drunk driver ran into a sheriff's deputy in oakland. they were on the way to the hospital to support their injured colleague. they smashed into the side of the patrol car and the driver was arrested for suspicion of dui and the deputy was not hurt. tradition is underway in the highest peak. ktvu's lorraine blanco is live on mount davidson covering the sunday service for us. >> reporter: good morning, mike. it is beautiful up here. the service started a few minutes ago in mount davidson. highest peak in san francisco. so many make the trek up here. this is the largest cross in america. standing 13 feet tall. it was illuminated by 1000 watts yesterday evening. the sun advise easter service is a popular annual tradition

in overnight news, they try to figure out what led to a mysterious car fire. >> flames were shooting out of the cars here. that's where they arrived at the off ramp in oakland at 3:00 a.m. the car had accident damage on the front and back. the driver was nowhere to be found. >> chp believes whoever was driving lost control and tried to get off the highway and when the car caught fire on the ramp. a child has been wounded by gunfire in the east bay. latest shooting happened yesterday afternoon. 7-year-old boy was shot at a family barbecue and police think the shots were fired into the backyard from an area near the g street overcrossing. the boy was airlifted to the hospital. and expect the to survive. he was visiting with husband parents and they have not made any arrests in the case. >> it is after a 10-year-old girl was grazed by a shooting in east oakland.

she was playing near 82nd avenue and a street when the shots were fired. on thursday 1-year-old baby was hit in the next by a bullet fragment. someone started shooting outside the apartment complex and they were visiting relatives. his family said he is recovering. people living in three bay area counties have to pay the highest sales tax. >> the rate will go up to 9%. santa clara residents have to pay 8.57% and in marin county, that is going to move up to 8.5%. 23 cities will see increases where people have to pay 9.5%. the new increases are in addition to the proposition 30 statewide sales tax increase that went into effect on january 1st. not necessarily the wettest month we had when it comes to 2,013. we are ending on a wet note. >> you are right. somebody on facebook said it

i was afraid. and now, it is like, it happened between themselves. >> investigators say the victim was shot after a car pulled up and asked if he was in a gang. >> they collected surveillance video to see if that will help them find the shooter. >> an 18-year old man is in custody near the bay fair bart station. >> he was arrested on friday. >> they called him the main suspect in the death of kenneth seats. two groups engaged in a gun battle at the bay fair station in january s two other suspects were arrested about a week after the shooting. >> in pleasant hill. an off duty firefighter is credited with rescuing three people and they included a woman in a wheelchair. >> it happened at 4:30 on pleasant hill road. the fire started in the garage. and collapsing the roof in the

lorraine. this church will feed close to 1000 people this morning. for many this is the only meal they'll get all holiday weekend. we've stood here in front of the church and seen a constant stream of people coming in these doors for a warm, free easter brunch. this breakfast is an annual event here at glide. it follows their sunrise service. later this morning they'll serve an easter dinner with their famous fried chicken. the reverend tells us it's not just about the comfort food. it's also about the comfort thousands get in knowing someone cares. >> a woman just came in this morning and said her brother died this morning. and she came to glide, because she needed to have some solace, some sense of community, some sense of people who care. that's what easter is important to do for all of us. it lifts us up. >> reporter: the easter dinner starts at 11 a.m. and goes until 1:30. glide expects to serve about 2000 meals today, and each year they hand out close to 1 million meals to the homeless and underserved people of the

arrow scow has a look at how the weather could impact your easter sunday >> and we could see that active weather return especially for this afternoon. a nice break in the rain. sunshine out there in many cases. but many nopes the sunshine helps to aid thunderstorms into the afternoon when that unstable weather will be rolling through the area. a look at storm tracker 2, watching a line of &8cewflight near sonoma, along napa road. this has been the last five to 10 minutes. we have light rain falling over you and from american canyon, down into vallejo, crossing 780, maybe a few sprinkles here. outside of that, partly cloudy skies, mostly sunny in some areas, but this is where the coolest, most unstable air lies. and it's going to be shifting over california, as we get into the afternoon and evening hours. right now it's about 200 miles off shore. when that happens, in addition to the mix of the sunshine, the clouds, the afternoon warming at the surface, that warm air at the surface, the very cool

the car. when our crew arrived at the claremont avenue off-ramp in oakland around 3 this morning, the car had accident damage in the front and back but that driver nowhere to be found. the chp believes whoever was driving lost control, hit a guard rail, tried to get off the highway and ran away when the car caught fire starting tomorrow, people in three bay area counties will have to pay some of the highest sales taxing in the state. san mateo county, the sales tax rate goes up to 9%. santa clara county residents will have to pay 8.75% and marin county sales tax will bump up to 8.5%. 24 cities will also see increases, including al company, where people will -- albany, where people will have to pay 9.5%. these new increase are in addition to the proposition 30 statewide sales tax increase that went into effect on january 1. astronaut to advocate, speaking out about the neither for gun control. >> it is important to take action, and the american people

thank you for joining us on this sunday morning. giving you a live view of mount hamilton, partly cloudy skies, we have clouds draped on the back side of that mountain, a cool shot. well, authorities in china starting to lose hope of finding any survivors in a massive mudslide which buried 83 gold mine workers. the landslide happened friday near tibet. searchers have already recovered 11 bodies and are searching for more this morning. efforts have been hampered by snow which started to fall yesterday. authorities say their chances of finding anyone alive are slim. the white house says it's taking new threats by north korea seriously. this morning a north korean official said that nuclear weapons are the nation's life and will not be traded. it comes just a stay after the

country said it was entering a state of war with south korea. the white house responded by saying the north korean country has a history of making empty threats. however the united states says it is prepared to defend its allies. a former u.s. ambassador says although north korea hasn't taken any military action there are concerns the country's 28- year-old leader may have something to prove. >> i think there are many north koreans who have their doubts about whether this kid is really up to this. >> south korea is on heightened alert. tensions started to escalate last month when the north carried out its third nuclear weapons test. new this morning, the husband of former congresswoman gabrielle giffords is making another push for gun control. >> over 90% of americans support a universal background check. and there is incredible momentum in congress and around the nation to get this done. >> this morning on fox news sunday, mark kelly said that access to mental health records should be included in a gun control bill being considered in congress.

giffords was seriously injured in a shooting rampage two years ago in tucson. the man who shot her passed a background, despite evidence of mental illness. an investigation is now under way into the shooting deaths of a north texas county district attorney and his wife. district attorney mike mcclellan and his wife cynthia were found dead yesterday in their home in coffman. the mayor of coffman says the shootings do not appear to be random. their deaths come just two months after an assistant district attorney was gunned down outside the county courthouse. investigators do not know if the deaths are connected. governor jerry brown has used the easter weekend to grant pardons to 65 people. governor jerry brown has used the pardons to go to people with drug convictions. one convicted murderer was also pardoned. all of them were released from prison more than 10 years ago and haven't committed any crimes since. this is the second time in the last year that governor brown has announced pardons the day before a religious holiday.

for a complete list of pardon goes to ktvu.com and click on hot topics. a second major donor has pulled out of the million dollar reward case offered in the christopher dorner case. the peace officers research association of california says it's going to rescind its $50,000 reward offer because dorner was never arrested, tried or convicted. he was wanted for killing two civilians and two police officers. but authorities say he took his own life during a standoff. the city of riverside also pulled its $100,000 reward offer last week and there are reports that other agencies may also take similar actions. we're learning major flaws were uncovered in if gps devices used to track sex offenders in california. testing on the electronic monitors last year found batteries died, cases cracked and offenders could jam the devices or block their signals. par rollees could essentially

block the signal. tomorrow hundreds of patients will be tested for hiv and hepatitis after a scare at a dental office in oklahoma. yesterday, hundreds of dental patients lined up to get their tests, but only 420 guests were actually completed. that's only a fraction of the 7000 people who were sent notices. health inspectors say the dentist used poor hygiene exposing patients to hiv and hepatitis. so far charges have not been filed against the dentist. his practice has been shut down while officials investigate. a southern california teenager is fighting to recover after losing four limbs when she became infected with a deadly form of meningitis. the family of kaitlin dabreaux has set up a website to help raise money towards her recovery and it's already been a pretty big success. the family says people across the nation have shown a lot of support. their goal was to raise $25,000 but donations now total more than $37,000. san francisco emergency officials want to make sure everyone is prepared for a

tsunami. yesterday emergency officials walked along the tsunami evacuati route at ocean beach. signs are posted from ocean beach to about 47th avenue, in areas that could be at greatest risk during a tsunami. areas at risk include the embarkadero, the piers and several blocks of the molina. >> every place that is in an inundation zone has the signs up so that residents, n.b.a.ers and visitors would know what to do. >> the department of emergency management says people should rely on neighborhood response teams during a tsunami. they're made up of people who have gone through 20 hours of training to help in a disaster. yesterday's event was part of national tsunami preparedness week. a baby polar bear found orphaned in alaska is making his way to new york's buffalo zoo. yesterday right here on mornings on 2 we introduced you to luna. she made her public debut on friday and yesterday we told you that she was being joined by a male polar bear cub from alaska.

and now, we are getting a look at luna's future roommate. this is koli. he was rescued two weeks ago after a hunter shot and killed his mother. alaska allows native transcribes to harvest polar bears and the hunter says he did not know the bear had a cub but now koli is at the alaska zoo in anchorage. he will be sent to new york this spring. zoo officials say having the two polar bears together will teach them not to rely on humans. recovering after being shot by an arrow. we'll tell you how a young girl in berkeley is recovering and a special surprise she is getting from her favorite singer. outside our doors this morning, sun, clouds, a few showers and i believe the showers will be on can t. increase for the afternoon. a look at what you can expect coming up. well, well, well.

clouds, the showers, thunderstorms. everything. >> could be pretty active out there, for especially the afternoon. giving you a peek at the radar right now. a few light showers falling over parts of sonoma. we have been watching this for the last 20 minutes or so. perhaps some light rain continuing to fall in your area from glen ellen, you can see just east there on the eastern side of sonoma, and then stretching down to highway 12. also around the american canyon into vallejo where i-80 meets 37. a few light sprinkles there. the bands of rain continue from south to north, and with that low off the coast, in the counterclockwise circulation, you can see how these bands continue to spin off and that's why they continue the motion that they do. the scattered showers continuing, perhaps to move and filleter into the north bay. the rest of us dealing with plod skies, even mostly sunny over parts of the inner east bay, over parts of the south bay, along the peninsula. that will aid in the afternoon thunderstorm threat. so for the morning, a few sprinkles, widespread 50s right now, spotty showers, i expect for the afternoon, right around

lunchtime if you're planning that noontime brunch. upper 50s to low 60s. into the afternoon, temperatures feeling fairly mild. a mix of sunshine and clouds, scattered showers, and thunderstorms look to be a good possibility. that's what we have in store for today. so get back to work tomorrow morning. we start out the day with the possibility of a few light showers. drying out throughout the course of the afternoon. we're dry by monday evening. dry tuesday, wednesday. more showers in the forecast on thursday. some areas have picked up a quarter inch to half inch of rain in the last 24 hours. i'll show you some of those rainfall totals thus far coming up big changes could be coming to coor pool lanes all across the state. cal trans is considering requiring all vehicles to have at least three people to qualify for the state's most congested car pool lanes. according to the oc register, california's currently under pressure from the federal government to improve car pool commuting times. right now most car pool lanes in the bay area only require two passengers, but there are some that require three.

we have new details from inside al maid county sheriff's patrol car during the rush to help after the shooting. >> officer shot. >> 10-4. we have suspect contained and second suspect shot >> the sergeant sped right towards 33rd avenue and san leandro street where a man suddenly drove away from a traffic stop dragging a deputy with him. the deputy was able to shoot the suspect several times. >> as the deputy was firing at him the car continued at a pretty high rate of speed, hit a telephone pole and a building. so the deputy's extremely lucky that he didn't receive very serious injuries. >> at least two deputies opened fire on the suspect, who died overnight at a hospital. the deputy who was dragged took a bullet in the foot. it is not clear if that bullet came from the gun found in the suspect's car or a deputy's gun. you can watch more of that exclusive video right on our

[ singing ] >> the vatican said around 250,000 people gathered at the traditional open air mass for the new pope's first easter address. the pope used the occasion to call for a diplomatic solution to end tensions involving north korea. he also called for peace between israelis and palestinians and an end to the civil war in syria. [ bagpipes ] the sound of bagpipes kicked off an easter morning tradition in san francisco. a large group of people went to the city's highest peak this morning for the annual sunrise servicest beneath the 103 foot tall mount davidson cross. christians have been hiking up mount davidson for the easter service for 91 years. and people attended easter sunday service in jerusalem at a church known as the

traditional site of the crucification, burial and resurrection of jesus. it's considered one of christianity's most sacred sites. the mass was led by the latin patriarch of jerusalem. he was appointed by pope benedict xvi in 2008. tomorrow the easter eggs will be rolling at the white house. more than 35,000 people are expected to attend the annual easter egg roll. there will be games, stories and live music on the south lawn. first lady michelle obama will also highlight her let's move initiative, encouraging children to eat healthy and exercise. the city of oakland is celebrating east were a traditional egg hunt. children have the chance to participate in two egg hunts today. the first one at montclaire park. that got under way 30 minutes ago. the second one will begin at 1:00 this afternoon at franklin park. there are just a lot of easter events going on all across the bay area today. the whole list is under the hot topics section at ktvu.com. well, we did experience a lot of wet weather overnight,

but there could be a bit of a break for your easter plans. let's go outside for a live look at oakland's jack london square. wind blowing just a little bit. looks pretty nice, though. we had overnight heavy rain, lightning and thunder. ktvu meteorologist rosemary orosco is joining us with a look at how the weather could impact your plans. rosemary. >> that band of rain, that organized band has moved off to the east. showers falling over the sierra this morning. still in the way of rain. so along those passes doing pretty good if you are heading up. people getting ready to enjoy spring break. if you have the week off and you're headed that direction, snow levels will be dropping later tonight. let's talk about what's happening here at home. we are seeing a nice little lull. we will see that break at least for the next few hours. i am picking up just a few scattered showers. the rain hasn't moved a whole lot from this spot. about a half hour ago it was in sonoma, now moving over the hills and getting red to push

into selina -- did i say selena? i'm sorry. st. helena. in and around vallejo, a few light sprinkles have moved through the area. that's about it. partly cloudy skies, mostly sunny skies in in most cases along the peninsula, south and east bay, but more to come. this is a system that will continue to bring us bands of rain. the center of the storm remains off the coastline. it's a couple hundred miles out and it will be shifting over the bay area later today into tonight, with that cold air, unstable air moving through. we'll see a good shot at maybe a few thunderstorms in the afternoon. so through about noontime, fairly quiet, maybe a few scattered showers popping up. that'sability -- that'sability it. mostly cloudy for the coast. maybe spotty showers around the bay area, 3, 4:00 more of the same. but with the clearing and warm air developing at the surface, cold air aloft and the very unstable air as the storm passes through the thunderstorm possibility will be increasing

for the end of the day. just be aware of it. it may be a day where you have sunshine and 10 minutes later it's pouring on you. it's one of those days. giving you a look at the rainfall over the last 24 hours. .2 of an inch reported in concord, .08 in oakland, .09 in san francisco. santa cruz mountains, a half inch. pacifica picked up .75 or three- quarters of an inch in the last 24 hours. that's good news. we know we are moisture starved and we could use whatever we get. a look at the forecast today. temperature wise a lot like what we saw yesterday. waking up in the 50s this morning, widespread 60s expected for the second half of the day. slightly cooler in most locations. tonight into tomorrow the rain will continue. periods of on and off scattered showers, drying out monday afternoon. we're dry tuesday, dry wednesday. the temperatures begin to rebound, upper 60s to low 70s. they fall off again on thursday, when we introduce the possibility of rain over the bay area once again. back to the desk.

we now know the young man killed yesterday morning in the mission district was college student home for spring break. friends identified him as jacob valdiviezo. he was a graduate of high school studying and playing football at lewis & clark college in oregon. the 19-year-old was shot while walking home with a friend yesterday morning. a woman who runs the store near the scene says shootings happen too often and the majority are gang related >> at the beginning when i came here i was so afraid of the shootings. but now it's like -- it happened between 10:30. >> yesterday officers collected surveillance video from nearby stores to see if any clues could be seen to help locate the gunmen. for the third time in three days a child has been wounded by gun fire in the east bay. the latest shooting happened yesterday in antioc. a ask st-year-old boy was shot at a family barbecue on william reid drive. the shots were fired into the backyard from an area near g

street overcrossing. the boy was air lifted to the hospital and is expected to survive. police haven't made any arrests. the shooting comes one day after a 10-year-old girl was grazed by flying debris in east oakland. the girl was out playing when shots were fired. and on thursday a one-year-old boy was hit in the neck by a stray bullet fragment in richmond. someone started shooting outside the apartment complex where one-year-old elijah ali was visiting relatives. elijah's family says he is recovering. an 18-year-old man is in custody in connection with the fatal shewelling near the bay fair bart station in san leandro. police say jabrie bennett was arrested in oakland on friday. police has called him their main suspect in the death of 50- year-old ken lee seats. investigators say seets was shot when two groups engaged in a gun battle at the bus area in january. two other suspects were arrested a week after the shooting. in pleasant hill an off-

duty firefighter is credited with rescuing three people from a house fire including a woman in a wheelchair. it happened about 4:30 yesterday afternoon. firefighters say the flames started in the garage then moved into the home through the attic, collapsing the roof in the kitchen. >> there were people in the house and they were being evacuated by somebody who identified himself as a lieutenant in the fire department. not sure who that is. we're searching to find out who they were. there were people in the house. one was confine to a wheelchair. >> no one was hurt and the cause of the fire is being investigated. a san jose firefighter who suffered heart attack while fighting a fire last year is returning to duty. tomorrow san jose firefighters welcome back frank ryan. he suffered heart attack on august 30th while fighting a fire at a downtown church. san jose firefighters supported ryan through his recovery. and even raised money to fly his family members to san jose. they plan to celebrate tomorrow morning at fire station 1 in downtown san jose. an 18-year-old man has been arrested for a crash in nevada

that killed five members of a california family. the crash happened early saturday morning on interstate 15 near mesquite. 80 miles northeast of las vegas. the nevada highway patrol says the young man who was also from california was driving a dodge durango that hit a chevy astro van from behind. >> there were a total of seven passengers in the chevy astro van. five of those seven were ejected from the van as it rolls over. >> three men and two women in that chevy astro van were killed. two other members of their family were hospitalized and are listed in critical condition. the suspect driving the durango was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. a memorial is being held today for a san francisco woman who was hit by a car in the city's west portal neighborhood. 68-year-old tanya madfest and her husband were both crossing the street when a driver struck them. she suffered severe brain trauma and later died at the hospital. her husband is recovering from a leg injury. today's memorial begins at

11:00 at the congregation beth salom. two businesses in sonoma are cited for selling alcohol to minors. police conduct ade coy operation at boys spring food center on state highway 12. they sent minors into the businesses to see if they would be sold alcohol. the employees of both locations were cited. the businesses are also being referred to the department of alcoholic beverage control. starting tomorrow, police officers will fan out all over the state as part of a distracted driving crack-down campaign. officers will be looking for drivers who are texting or are talking while holding their cell phones. statewide numbers show more than 425,000 tickets were given out last year for people using their phones while driving. in 2011, more than 3300 people were killed in crashes blamed on distracted driving. if you get a ticket, it will cost you about $159. well, someone from the bay area may be the owner of a winning lotto ticket worth $265,000.

california high schooler accused of shooting a classmate may reveal more about his mindset. the bakersfield californian reports investigators found a story online by 16-year-old brian oliver. it features a character who was bullied by his peers and later kills his tormenters. oliver was reportedly bullied before opening fire at cap union high school near bakersfield in january. the shooting injured two people. oliver is being charged as an adult. he has pleaded not guilty. his next court hearing is set for may. two events are planned to mark the anniversary of the shooting in oakland. tuesday marks one year since a gunman killed seven people and injured three others at the school. oycos will host a memorial concert in oakland on saturday and another in sacramento on april 13. a former nursing student has been charged in the case. a judge declared he is not competent to stand trial. he is being held in the mental hospital located in napa. we're learning the two men suspected of stealing more than a million dollars worth of gold

from a siscu county courthouse are from the bay area. wanters have been issued for 49- year-old david dean johnson of el vito and 51-year-old scott wayne bailey on friday. the break-in happened in february of 2012. you're looking at surveillance video that captured it while it happened. officials say the two men stole gold jewelry and other historic artifacts from that display case which was inside the courthouse. detectives say some of these stolen items may have already been sold. state lawmakers plan to take up a bill next week that would make it easier to discipline and fire teachers accused of misconduct. the bill was introduced by alamo assembly woman joan buchanan and it would speed up the appeals process after a teacher is fired. california's largest teachers union is backing the measure. it fought a similar proposal last year that would have given districts the power to resolve dismissal ill disputes. this morning, heavenly ski resort in lake tahoe has been fined more than $90,000 for several violations of california environmental laws. the california department of

toxic substances control says the violations stem from a 2010 inspection of the resort and its upper maintenance shop located above the lodge. the resort is also accused of failing to have controls to prevent spills for a used oil tank. resort officials told the tahoe daily tribune there was no spill associated with the violation, and heavenly currently is facebook founder m zuckerberg is shows signs that he wants to gel soffed with public -- get involved with public policy issues. the contra costa times reports zuckerberg is starting an advocacy group with other tech executives. the group will focus on immigration reform, education, and other issues that effect the economy. the 28-year-old billionaire is said to have pledged $50 million for the group, which could launch in just a couple of weeks. apple wants to redesign its iphones. the company has filed a peanut for a new iphone design -- a patent for a new iphone design that can display information on both sides of the phone. the patent says the phone will
